Give your book a strong beginning

I just finished an article for the Writers’ Resources website, covering this topic in about 800 words. But for folks who don’t want to read that much, here it is in a nutshell.

  • Start with your character facing a challenge or a puzzle. Make the reader curious about what comes next.
  • Don’t start strong and then fizzle out. Keep up the interesting writing, even beyond that first sentence.
  • Once you’ve written, go back and figure out where it gets interesting, and delete everything up to that point.

And if you want to know more, go read Famous First Words: Give your work a strong beginning.
